Most notable for the large prominent flowers, lilies are a genus of herbaceous flowering plants that grow from bulbs. Though there are some flowers that have ‘lily’ in the name they are not considered members of the lilium family, for example Lily of the Valley, and Tiger Lily (alstroemeria).
There is no need to place a lily bouquet in full sun. Cut flowers are best preserved away from direct sunlight and heat. While the lily flower does need sunlight to grow in the ground outdoors, its needs change after cutting. Cut lilies prefer a cool location away from heating vents and other sources of intense warmth.
The most dominant lily meaning is purity. It’s associated with a sense of innocence as well as femininity and fertility. White lilies are often chosen for bouquets and arrangements when this meaning is intended. There are pure white lily flowers as well as white lilies with small red speckles or bold red stripes down the centre of each petal. There are also some boldly coloured lilies that have different lily meanings. If you want to create a bright floral bouquet that conveys energy and confidence, look for orange lilies or a combination of orange and yellow lilies. If you want to send a warm thank you or give someone a cheerful smile on a hard day, yellow lilies are the perfect selection. To soften the brightness of yellow and orange lilies, consider a bouquet that mixes in some white or light pink flowers.
You can expect cut lily flowers to last up to two weeks in a vase with fresh water. You can extend their life by diagonally cutting the bottom inch from each flower’s stem. That allows your lilies to easily absorb water and nutrients that are needed to stay healthy for the longest period possible. Before placing your bunch of lilies in a vase, also carefully remove any leaves that may touch or go beneath the water level. Those leaves may introduce bacteria into the water that could shorten the life of the lily flowers. You may also want to delicately remove any blooms or higher leaves that don’t look healthy. One advantage of ordering a lily bouquet from our premier delivery service is the assurance of receiving fresh, healthy blooms that are ready for display upon arrival at your doorstep.
